REx-PN Exam Prep for Ontario RPN Candidates
REx-PN exam prep for Ontario Registered Practical Nurse candidates: practice questions, clinical cases and mock exams built to the NCSBN Client Needs test plan, with CNO practice standards and Ontario law — PHIPA, the Nursing Act, 1991 and the RHPA — throughout, never Alberta's.
Built for the REx-PN, not relabelled from another exam
Most "Canadian practical nurse" prep is CPNRE material with the name changed. The REx-PN is a different exam: a different blueprint (the four Client Needs categories — Safe & Effective Care Environment, Health Promotion & Maintenance, Psychosocial Integrity, Physiological Integrity), a different format (computer-adaptive, variable length) and a different regulator. Lumina's Ontario bank is written against that blueprint, item by item, and every legal, scope, consent and privacy question cites the Ontario instrument by name.
- Questions and cases scoped to Ontario. An Ontario learner is never shown an Alberta legal item, and an Alberta learner never sees PHIPA. The scoping is enforced by the product, not by an editor's memory.
- Every item reviewed by a pipeline before a person. Each Ontario question passes a lint, a multi-model consensus, a blind solver, an adversarial audit — and then a nurse educator. Nothing reaches you unreviewed.
- An AI tutor that knows where you are. Ask it which privacy law governs your charting and it says PHIPA, names the CNO, and calls your exam the REx-PN — because it reads your jurisdiction, not a script.
- Scope checker for Ontario. Describe a task and get a ruling against the Nursing Act, 1991 controlled acts and the CNO practice standards, with the instrument cited.

Frequently asked questions
Which exam does an Ontario practical nurse write?
The REx-PN (Regulatory Exam – Practical Nurse), used by Ontario and British Columbia since January 2022. Ontario practical-nurse candidates register with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs).
How is the REx-PN different from the CPNRE?
The REx-PN is a computer-adaptive test of 90 to 150 items over 4 hours, scored pass/fail, built on the NCSBN Client Needs categories. The CPNRE (Alberta and most other provinces) is a fixed 160-question form on the CPNRE competency framework. Prep built for one is not built for the other — see CPNRE vs REx-PN.
Is Lumina's Ontario content the Alberta content relabelled?
No. Ontario items are written against the REx-PN Client Needs categories and cite Ontario instruments — the CNO practice standards, the Nursing Act, 1991, the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 and PHIPA. Alberta items cite Alberta law and are never shown to an Ontario learner.
Is the mock exam adaptive like the real REx-PN?
Not yet. The real REx-PN is computer-adaptive; Lumina's Ontario mock is a fixed 120-item form drawn to the same test-plan proportions. Adaptive delivery arrives once enough Ontario learners have answered enough items to calibrate them.
Is Lumina AI approved or endorsed by the CNO?
No. Lumina AI is an independent study tool built to the published REx-PN test plan and the CNO's published standards. It is not affiliated with, approved by or endorsed by the College of Nurses of Ontario or NCSBN.
What does early access mean for Ontario?
Ontario is live for sign-up while the Ontario question bank is still being reviewed by nurse educators. New items are served unscored until they have earned statistics, and you may notice the bank growing week to week. Free to start; no credit card required.
