Practical Nurse Exam Prep Across Canada: 2026 Map

Lumina started as CPNRE prep for Alberta. As of today it lives at practicalnurseprep.com, because practical nursing students in every province deserve prep written for their exam, their regulator and their law, not a neighbour's. Here is where we are, province by province, and what is coming.

Two practical nursing exam study plans laid side by side on a desk, one for the CPNRE and one for the REx-PN
TL;DR: Canada has three practical nurse entry exams: the CPNRE in most provinces and the territories, the REx-PN in Ontario and British Columbia, and the OIIAQ professional exam in Québec. Lumina is live in Alberta, in early access in Ontario and British Columbia, and coming soon everywhere else, targeted by the end of 2026. Every province gets its own regulator, title and legislation, and nobody is ever taught another province's law.

Why the province matters more than the exam

Most of practical nursing is the same in Halifax as in Kelowna: assessment, pharmacology, infection control, care planning. What changes at a provincial border is the law. Who regulates you, what your title is, which act defines your scope and which statute governs the chart are all provincial. A study tool that teaches one province's law to everyone is right in one place and wrong in twelve. Lumina reads your province and gives you your own legal, scope, consent and privacy content, and the product enforces it: a learner is never shown another province's legal items.

Live and early access today

Early access means you can sign up and study today. Most practice items in early-access provinces are in pilot: they have passed our automated review and are being checked by a nurse educator, and the mock exam results screen tells you how many of your questions were pilot items.

Coming soon: every other province and territory

We are targeting the end of 2026 for the rest of the country. Each province opens when its legal and scope items have been written against its own legislation and reviewed by a nurse educator. Every one already has a page with a waitlist, and we email you once, the day it opens.

Students in the United States

US practical and vocational nursing students write the NCLEX-PN, with state boards of nursing and US law. It is a different exam and a different legal system, so it gets its own content rather than a relabelled Canadian bank. It is next on our roadmap after Canada; join the list below and we will tell you when it opens.
